Mexico: Fireball over Sinaloa

Local residents reported seeing a fireball in the sky that split into three parts before disappearing.

The phenomenon took place yesterday afternoon, Wednesday 04 January 2012.

Tatiana Kokima and Emiliato TerĂ¡n, astrophysicists with the State Science Center (Centro de Ciencias del Estado), who form part of the search team, dismissed the possibility that it could be a meteorite given that the Sinaloa's Seismic Network did not pick up any impact.

Accoridng to the Civil Protection agency, it could be "space junk".

On the other hand, NASA confirmed detection of a heavenly body that entered the atmosphere at 18:50 hours on 04 January, and which could have crashed somewhere in the Sierra de Sinaloa on the border with Chihuahua, or in the municipalities of Salvador Alvarado and Mocorito.

No official story has been put forward.
